Real estate brokens, air traffic controllers, fashion designers, plumbers and sonographers were all included on a recent Forbes.com list of 14 jobs that don't require a four-year college degree but potentially offer six-figure salaries. Sonographers (ultrasound technologists) were described as "...another health care job that is finding itself relatively recession-proof."

Payscale.com measured the average earnings for workers with at least eight years in their field. According to their data, the top 10% of sonographers currently earn $110,000 and those in the top 25th percentile earn $82,500. Those figures take into account substantial overtime which is common among many hard-charging healthcare workers. Radiation therapists were the only other healthcare occupation on the list.
